What’s in Luxembourg?

Okay, my husband Mike is crazy. I believe I mean that he is crazy in the casual way people say, “He’s crazy!” But sometimes, I’m not so sure.

We live in Germany, and every other city, or district, or country near us, seems to be within throwing distance from where we are.  Because of this, my husband wants to go there.

We were in Trier, Germany, last month, just for the day.  And because we spent most of the day in that town (looking for the Karl Marx house), I figured we’d just go back to our hotel, and call it a night.  My husband had other plans. He said what all crazy people say, “Let’s do it!”

So, we headed to Luxembourg City. Actually, it is the closest city to Trier—just in the opposite direction of our hotel.

Now, we didn’t really plan this adventure (and I have a very uncooperative travel app on my iPhone) so, we didn’t really know what we were going to see. We parked the car and let our feet carry us into the City Center and beyond.

Luxembourg City is the seat of the Luxembourg Government, and several institutions of the European Union. Which would explain all the official looking buildings we saw.

I later learned that despite it’s small size, the city has several museums and art galleries and theaters. It is also home to the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial. This is the final resting place of more than five thousand American military members, including George S. Patton.  But we didn’t see any of those sites. Our “drive-by” tour of Luxembourg City took us to a park, where we walked up and down several flights of steps.

We did get to see a few of the local sites:  From our vantage point in the park, we could see the expanse of the Adolphe Bridge.

We actually walked right up to the bridge later.  This is the best picture I could take of the plaque on the side of the bridge.

And just outside of this park area was Notre-Dame Cathedral.  It’s the only cathedral in Luxembourg.

All in all it was a fun little side-trip.  We saw a few things and were able to visit another country in Europe. So, maybe my husband isn’t so crazy after all.  Maybe.
